"WAX/PAPER” Opens at EAI

Santa Fe artists are part of a new exhibition featuring encaustic (pigmented wax) and
paper works at the Encaustic Art Institute, Cerrillos. “Wax/Paper” opens with a
reception from 1:00 - 6:00 Saturday, July 24th in the Pyramid Gallery on the Institute’s campus just north of the historic village of Cerrillos. From Santa Fe, take Highway 14-the scenic Turquoise Trail--south about 18 miles. Just before the historic town of Cerrillos turn left onto County Road 55 A (General Goodwin Road). The Institute’s driveway is the first right.

“Wax/Paper” showcases just one more way artists can use the ancient encaustic
medium for contemporary work. “I started as a representational artist working with acrylic,” says Institute President Harriette Tsosie. “Then I discovered encaustic. My work has become increasing abstract as I learn what this ancient medium can do for contemporary artists.” Tsosie notes the medium was developed by the Egyptians and perfected by the Greeks and Romans as they occupied ancient Greece. “It was essentially used for painting mummy portraits,” Tsosie said. “Now artists can paint with it, sculpt it, carve it, pour it, put it on paper, and use it for 3-D work. It’s amazing.”

Santa Fe area artists included in “Wax/Paper” are: Paige Baillie, Martha Baker, Guy Baldovi, Dennis Branch, Fionna Buck, Yvonne Burk, Jackie Butler, Louise Casselman, Andrea Cermanski, Linda Fillhardt, Nicholas Gadbois, Barbara Gagel, Joan Heiden, Stephanie Huerta, Douglas Mehrens, Kate Palmo, Sallyann Paschall, Teena Robinson, Paula Roland, Joyce Roetter, Cherry Whitener Rohe, Susan Shaffer, Richard Schleifer, Douglas Smith, Russell Thurston and Carol Ware.

The Institute incorporated as a non proift several years ago and now has more than 70 members from across North America. It offers workshops and public education programs for all levels of students, promotes and exhibits encaustic work, and is estabishing a permanent collection and library. Dialectic Show Opens May 22 at the EAI

"DIALECTIC”. Artists who work in encaustic (pigmented wax) are partnering with artists who work with other media in a new exhibition--”Dialectic” --opening Saturday, May 22 at the Encaustic Art Institute. The Institute will host an opening reception from 1:00 - 6:00 PM.

Participating artists and their collaborative team include: Fionna Buck and Cathleen Higgins; Andrea Cermanski and Tanya Story; Diane de Fremery, Susan Varon and Judy Van Heyst; Linda Fillhardt and Maryellen Stewart; Stephanie Huerta and Thea Witt; Douglas Mehrens, Adam Eisman, Linda Leslie, and Lee Manning; Barbara Michener and Jane Belew; Cherry Whitener Rohe and Jamie Rohe; Russell Thurston and Joel Nakamua; Harriette Tsosie, Donna Caulton and Belinda Edwards; Paula Verona and Nicki Marx; and Carol Ware and Vahid Mojarrab.

Located just north of the historic village of Cerrillos and about 18 mles south of Santa Fe on the Turquoise Trail, the Encaustic Art Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and exhibiting encaustic art. Its distinctive Pyramid Gallery is open weekends from 1:00 - 6:00 from March through October. Take Highway 14 south of Santa Fe or north from Albuquerque. Turn East on County Road 55A (General Goodwin Road). The Institute is at 18 County Road 55A. “Dialectic” continues through June.
